BBFC Age ratings

After viewing a BBFC document, we were mde aware that our film was a PG, since there was no bad language used. There was little gore (only a little blood from the mouth), but we were aiming for a rating of 12A if we were to carry on. We would meet this standard, by using a lot of bruising, cuts and blood, along with many more weapons, and include little bad language. Our protagonists would endure a lot of pain, and injury as well as the antagonist. We found this out by Karlton

Shooting schedule

We have decided to film on the 2nd January where we are all free, and are able to make it to Cosby. We have also decided that we will meet up at around 12  and will finish around 8 so we can have a a good time deciding on what shots look best, what actions work best, and what fight moves work best. We have decided that it was best for us to be the ones in the film as we all know how exactly we want the actions and fight scene to look.

More tutorials

I looked online for help using the Imovie, i thought this would be good to search for me as it would be my first time using this editing software. I thought it would be best for me to have an idea of what we were using and how to use the software effectively, rather than wasting a lesson where we could be editing we spend trying to figure out we have to do.

Social Network Survey Results

After putting the link to the survey on Facebook I have had a few results. The results that I got where:
That people like fast pace editing as it gives them a sense of excitement and joy.
That people like to see the use of weapons, as it gives an even more rush of excitement and adrenaline as they want to see who survives and likes the idea of seeing people rush from bullets and whatever is flying in their direction.
People would like to see more girl leads, as most action films have male leads. Although action films do get a lot of publicity and does enchant to a lot of people, they feel that they are very masculine base as almost all films have male leads.

I feel that after this we need to make sure that we have a  main women would be the protagonist. We will still have a male involved as that will help with the male audience, and possibly help with the connections within the film.
We will also make sure that there is some fast pace editing, especially within the fight scene. We want the fight scene to look realistic but it will also bring some excitement for the audience that is watching.

Preliminary Task

We did this in a two hour lesson in and around school. We went to the music tech block and used one of them rooms. We used the 180 degree rule (which is where the camera only shoots 180 degrees of the setting you are in, and the characters stay either on the right or left side of the screen where they don't change sides.),
match on action (this a editing technique where there is a shot that cuts to another to portray the action of the shot in the first shot.),  and shot reverse shot (this is another editing technique that is used in conversations or when people look at people, they either use point of view shot, or over the shoulder shot.) . Doing this has helped us with techniques on the way use the camera. We also have more of a chance of using more camera shots as we did close ups on Karlton and my hand and face.  Faith was the one in control of the camera as me and Karlton are in the camera shots. We felt that Karlton should walk as we all felt that he had a better walk than I did.

Costume Ideas

There are ideas that i have for costume.
The hero would wear lighter clothes and look smart. They would be there day to day clothes, they would also have neutral make-up. Unlike the villain that would wear dark clothing which would usually be mostly black, and be less smart that the hero. There hair would usually be slick back and up in a pony tail if a women, and short spikey hair if a man. Women would usually wear darker make-up, for example smokey eyes.
I thought this as most people in action films are like this. We can usually tell the difference  from who is the antagonist, and the protagonists.

Opening textual analysis - Skyfall

I have decided to do another analysis. I have choose to do it on Skyfall in the James Bond saga as they are well known action films.
At the beginning of this film the screen is fully blurred, but we see a silhouette. This the well known James Bond, as we can tell by the stance.

The more he walks forward the clearer he gets meaning when he reaches the camera it is a shallow depth shot. During the walk forward we hear the non-diegetic constant buzzing most likely from wind instruments which usually conotates a sign of danger.
There is then an over the shoulder shot over the door which is slightly open and with lights on which usually makes the audience feel panicked as this usually shows that there is some sort of danger about to happen.
When he gets to the room the non-diegetic music speeds up to  give us as the audience a sense of dread and fright. In the room there are a lot of filler lights to try and make the scene look more dingy.
Bond in most of the shots taken is in the centre. This shows that he is the main character and that he is very important to the story.
There is then a chase scene, which is very typical in a high end action film scene. There is  non diegetic string music in this gets louder and gets higher during the course of the chase scene. This shows the intensity of the scene. There are drum beats that start playing when shooting starts out between the antagonists and the protagonists, this shows the anticipation. During the shooting there are diegetic screams, this gives people a sense of fear, as well as blurred people running away.
The antagonists are wearing darker coloured suits; such as brown, black and less smart than the protagonist. The protagonists are wearing lighter colours such as grey and white and look very smart.
The antagonists have big machine guns which is usual for them in action films. While the protagonists usually have the smaller hand held glocks.

There is one strand in this opening which is getting the antagonists, and it is 3rd person. The audience of this film will be teenagers and those who are a fan of the Bond films as there are many out there. This means that there could be the social solidarity of the uses and gratification theory would be used more, as peoples family and friends are telling people how good the films are.

Focus group

We asked a few people on what they thought the conventions on what action films should have, and what they thought would be interesting to include in our production. These are the results and the specific questions we asked them.

Discussion

In this audio chat, we discuss many ideas that we have had, and the ideas that we believe might work and however, might not in contrary. In this voice recording we talk about some of the ideas we have in for our production. We mostly discuss the fight scene, and the beginning of the production of what happens. We decided that there will be 3 main characters, and that their relationship will be siblings.

Audience Profiling

Our typical audience is going to be those between the ages of 14-25, as there will be some blood, and there may be some things that younger people won't want to see. The film production will involve attractive women so the main gender audience will be male. This will help get the audience of both genders. There will be a bruising and a fight scene, so the younger generation may get scared. I feel that the audience will enjoy our idea of films as it is a genre that teenagers and older like to watch. We know this by most action films are 15s.
The different films in this type of genre are usually aimed at those above 14.

Fight scene practise

Today we went outside and tried to practice some fight scene moves. We took it in turns to practice fight scene. We all made sure we practiced one thing with each other. We also discussed more on what would happen when we actually film the fight scene. We have found some moves that we will use and others that we won't.

social networking

We have decided that we will do another questionnaire that we will put on our social media sites, and hopefully we will get a large range of people answering the questions.
We are working together to make the questions that would be on the questionnaire.
I have put the questionnaire on my Facebook account, to help get a range of people answering questions.

Questionnaire results.

3 said; What do you first think of when you see the words - 'Action Film.'  The results show that people would associate 'Action' with -
Violence, fighting, climax and blood.

This helped me to realise what elements people expect to see in an Action Film. Although we don't really want our production to be too cliché, and similar to other films. We still want there to be aspects of the film that the genre theory will help identify this genre. After the results we see some of the things we should include in the production.

4 said; How do Action films make you feel? The results showed me that -
75% felt Excited
18% felt Tense
7% felt Nervous

These results show that the most feelings of our audience would be excited. Although we don't know what makes the audience feel excited. We could have improved this questionnaire by asking what in the action films makes the people feel excited. Then we would know exactly what to focus in the two minute production.

5 said; How important do you think these items are for an Action genre? (1 being the LEAST important.)
Results:
61 points for an AXE
52 points for a KNIFE
46 points for a SWORD
43 points for a GUN
38 points for EXPLOSIONS

Having the axe as the top of the list shows that this is one of the main weapons that people think are rather important. We as a group have decided that we may use this, or the use of knives which was the second from top important weapon. We will use this to show the type of genre we decided to do as our production.

9 said; What do you think is important for an Action film?
Results:
26.67% of people said that Jump-scares were important.
 53.33% said explosions
 20.00% said violence
33.33% said blood
86.67% said a unique story line

With the results being high for the unique story line shows that we have to focus on this part of the script when we write it. This also means that the ideas have to be original. We can be influenced by people, films, directors etc... We will not be able to use explosions which is another thing people think of to associate with action films. but we will be able to use blood which is also important for people to see during action films.

11 said; IDEA: one evening, three people sit at a dinner table together enjoying a meal as they socialise. The room stands silent. You can only hear the sound their cutlery scraping across their plates. Two of the characters look at each other and look back at the third character on the other side of the table. A fight lashes out. Please give some of your opinions, and tell us how we can improve this idea :)
Results:
One person stated -

'One character could go to the toilet, or go to move away, turning their back, and then the fight starts, as he hears them move towards him, he turns around and comes face to face with the knife. FIGHTTT.'

I feel that this could be a good idea if filmed and edited properly, but they shouldn't be face to face with the knife. As it could be dangerous and if we were to do a close up of the persons face, their expressions may turn out wrong and not look the way tit was meant to. I really like the idea of someone walking away with their back to the other people in the scene.

Another stated -

'Maybe have a small argument before hand then the silence cuts and the fight follows so that the audience have some insight as to why the fight is happening but not too much insight, they can't know everything. but sound alike an amazing idea :)'

I like the idea of the audience knowing a bit about why the characters in the film are having a fight scene, nut not knowing all, as the rest of the film/production if were to be longer than 2 minutes would be finding out exactly what happened. . Although that story will need to be unique. I feel that the silence shouldn't be too long as it could cause too much tension if were to put that there.

All together I found that we should use some sort of weapon in the production. We should also focus the main characters in the first 30 seconds - 1 minute of the clip. I also found that people enjoy watching action films, so we should find out what the audience finds exciting about these types of films. The results of the questionnaire show that the use of blood, this makes our idea of using blood even more dominant for the production.

Theatrical Research:

Karlton armstrong  and faith starie  We worked together through this research as there was a lot to do.  I  did the audience theories, and the representation theories, and me and faith worked together on the Narrative theories as we both used Knight and day as an example.

Questionnaire

We helped Faith came up with questions to put on our questionnaire that was emailed to people around the school. This is our questionnaire.

Conventions

I have found that some sort of weapon is used in action films. We as group have thought that we will use a weapon, although it will not be deadly, and we will not hurt each other with it. We have decided that a knife may be the best bet to use as the weapon in our film, especially as we are not able to get a hold of other weapons, and we will not be able to use other dangerous weapons.

During action film openings there are usually a small fight scene, for example the opening of skyfall, and fast and furious 7.These have led us to want us to put a small fight scene in this two minute opening. During the scene the fight may be small but it is very dramatic, which shows the convention of the genre, it also helps identify the genre of the film. .
We also found that the princess is never really in the first few minutes of the film, the antagonist and protagonist are always the main characters in the opening clips, so we as a group have decided to follow this convention.

Splitting the work between us.

Today we have decided that we are going to split the work between us, so that we can get the work done sooner and get to the filming of the clip.

Wednesday, 18 November 2015

Talking about ideas

We had even more ideas today. We talked about keeping the fight scene in the dinning room but not start the two minute clip with that. We would start with the guest of the house walking down the street towards them, he opens the door to the house to find the two house owners fighting, and almost getting hit by something flying towards him.  We have decided that we will all think of ideas round the setting of the dinning room. We have also decided that we will most likely use Faith's dining room as we feel that her house is the biggest out of all of ours, and that it also more of a open plan which means that there is more room for us to follow the convention of action by having a good fight scene.

Sub-genre of action

There a lot of conventions for action films, but they do have sub-genres. One of their sub-genre's is Action Adventure - this sub genre can take place in another world, or shot as though it is set in the future. The hero is usually human and the villain is usually a different creature or someone from the future or past trying to stop what is going on. Some examples of these sub-genres are Men in Black, Avatar.
Another sub genre of action films are fantasy action;
These are mostly super hero films, they are classed as action as there is a hero who tries to good but there may be a fight scene. The conventions of this film genre is that both hero and villain are some sort of creature or thing that is non-human as well as being human. For example Spiderman - Spiderman was the hero but there where many villains that had other identities (the big lizard). As well as the is usually hero costume would be brighter and lighter than the villains whose would usually be black.
Action-thriller is another sub genre of action. This types films are usually darker than the normal action films. There will probably be a lot more use of blood and more dangerous weapons.

Genre Research

In Todarov's Narrative Theory, the usually equilibrium of Action films is the hero doing something every day like going to the shop or hanging around with friends and family.  The disruption would be them finding the antagonist's and the hero finding out that he is a good fighter.  The recognition of disruption is when the hero plans to defeat the antagonists and he also plans to do something good, which usually is to try and get the girl. The attempt to repair disruption is where we see the fight scene between the antagonist and protagonist. This can usually be very dramatic, but the protagonist usually wins. The return to the equilibrium is where the hero usually gets his happy ending and gets the girl.

Email

I emailed the company 'Moving Picture Company'. I got the email from a person I know who works there and they were more than willing to help me and my group.
This is the email that I sent;

I have covered the email addressees as the person I talked to asked me politely not to give them out so I doing just what they said.

The response to this email is

Ideas

We have know decide to do a action film with thriller elements. We are still not sure on whether are we are wanting to do a dream state or not but we have completely decided that we are doing a fight scene. We  are leaning towards having the fight scene in a dining room and being able to get a hold of props that could cause damage to humans if the props where real. Our idea is that we have two sisters or best friends are having a meal with their friend, and they do something as a code to kill (nod, touch a glass) and that'll start the fight scene. We have decide that the we see the protagonist and the antagonist in the opening scene. The main people in this film are going to be two girls and one male based around a dining room. And then the fight scene will occur.

Influential Figures.

I have many influential figures, but not many from the genre that we are picking which is thriller and action. Although i have researched many actors that have been in thrillers and action films, as well as directors, institutions and producers.
Actors:
Liam Nelson - This actor has been in the many action films, the Taken series is one of the films he is well known for. He has been around for a while so has been in many films ranging from comedy to action. He is well known to the young generation as of Taken and Ted 2. He has a 2 children, a daughter and a son, and unfortunately his spouse in 2009, and yet he still manages to have a brilliant acting career. This one of the reasons that Liam Nelson is a influential figure. He has also been in the rom-com which gives him a range acting techniques and a range of experience for the films he stars in.  We feel that Liam Nelson is influential to our genre as he has been in a lot of intense scenes in the film he has done. As we want a intense film we have him to look at on how to get the actors to react.

This is taken from taken 2, one of the most well known films he has been in. This photo shows that he is not using a gun which is good for us, as we are unable to use guns. His facials also gives us influence on how to get the actors to do a smiler face.

Tom Cruise - This actor again has been part of many action films. He is one of the most famous and well-known actors to this day. He has been married 3 times and has 3 children ranging these marriages. At the age of 53 he has been in over 50 films. One of his most famous franchise was the mission impossible. This is one of the many action films that he has been in. He like Liam Nelson are mostly known for there action films rather than the other genres that they have stared in. Tom cruise usually plays the laid back but intelligent character but also the hero in the film. In the romantic films that he has played in he is the leading man in them. We type cast Tom Cruise with action films. We think that he is influential as he does a lot of his own stunts.

This is from the film knight and day, this film shows off his fighting techniques and his techniques with gun. Although we are only focused with the his fighting techniques, and his usual cool statue when put in to the fight scene. We want the protagonist to look like this when
they are put in the fight scene.

Christopher Walken - He is a well known actor who can play many characters and can do them well. He has been in genres ranging from romance, to comedy, to thriller/horror. Some of the films he has been part off are Pulp fiction, Hairspray, the deer hunter and seven psychopaths. these are only some of the films that Walken has been in. Christopher Walken is influential to us as he can show a wide range of styles of horror (psychological horror). We see how he re-acts to the surprising things that has happened through films.

Directors:
Tony Scott - Tony Scott is a well known British director who is the director of top gun. Unfortunately Scott died in 2012 after directing and producing many films and TV series. Scott would usually cast Denzel Washington and Christopher Walker. He also like to use dogs in some of his films such as such as, enemy of the state, man on fire. Tony Scott is the younger brother of Ridley Scott who is also a well known director. His directors trademark is a camera pan across a large towers or sites. He likes to use sunlight flashing at the characters to make the picture more effective. He is influential to me as he has a great technique of making action films. We like the use of camera shots he used through
the fight scenes through out his films.
Paul Greengrass - he is a director and a writer, and is well known for the Bourne Ultimatum, captain Phillips, the Bourne supremacy, and united 93. These are all action films. Greengrass is a British director and he started his love with the camera in secondary school with a simple camera where he made short animation films of horror with old dolls, dummies and things around the house. He likes to use a held hand camera as he feels that it creates a sense of realism. He also likes to tell the stories from real life experiences or stories. Again we like the shots through the fight scenes, and the plots of
the film he has directed.
James Cameron - Cameron has won three Oscars for the work he has done, he has also had 11 academy awards from just 'Titanic'. He is mostly known from directing Avatar, Aliens, Titanic, and terminator 2. He has his own production company ' Lightstorm Entertainment' in 1990. He is one of the most sought after directors in Hollywood. Cameron has a lot of trademarks in his films some of those are;
- he likes to have strong female characters,
- likes close ups of feet or wheels usually when crushing things,
- bringing the camera close in when there are fight scenes to give a claustrophobic effect,
- he likes using slow motion in intense film or to intensify scenes,
- he likes to include humanities ignorance and over-use and over-reliance of technology.
Cameron has introduced a new generation of stereo imaging camera called the 'fusion camera'.
He is mostly known for the action adventure fantasy films. I like how he uses worlds that are't with human existence.
Alfred Hitchcock - Hitchcock was known for making psychological thrillers/horror films. He is mostly known for these four films; psycho, vertigo, rear window, north by Northwest, although he has directed many more films. He has been nominated for around 32 awards and has won 25 awards. He was English but had moved to America where he died in 1980. he had many trade marks some being that; he liked to have close ups of women's hairstyles; he liked the theme of mistaken identity or the wrong man theme or even assumed identity in his movies; when he wanted to create suspense in his films he would alternate between different shots to extend cinematic time, and when doing car chase scenes he would alternate between shots from the drivers point of view and close up shots of those inside the car from different directions ( this would keep the viewers in the car so if any danger was encountered it would be more richly felt); he would create shadows on walls to create tension and suspense; he liked to shot films in a study so he could have full control of lighting and other effectors that could effect the shoot if they were out on location. I like the idea of psychological thrillers as it makes us think about what it is happening on screen and it will leave us thinking about it for a while once the film has finished. I find him influential as he can mess with people's mind which is part of what we want to do.

Companies;
Companies don't really specialise in doing genres, the genres usually define with the directors, so if the company enjoy the work of a director they may want to publish there work...
Moving Picture Company: it is one of my influential figures as the company is British, and that they have helped publish a lot of well known films, although not all of them are action or thriller, the genres that they do range dramatically. This company has a lot of sections and they all range differently, They also do advertising. This company specialises in special effects. Some of the films they have done special effects on are; The Hunger Games, Fast and furious, The Amazing Spider-man, Harry Potter.
They also do production company which have produced Pan, Harry Potter, Fantastic Four, Pirates of the Caribbean. These are only some of the well known films that they have produced.
They have advertised many things including plane companies, alcohol, shops (John Lewis), cars and games and many more companies.
Paramount pictures - This film company has helped distribute many famous films. The films that they are produced are Hollywood film, they are very well known from all around the world. They have done a lot of action films and thriller films, such as, Paranormal activity and mission impossible, pain and gain, and top gun.
Universal - Again, this is a well known company. The logo of this a picture of the world, this is highly recognised by people around the world. There is a special theme park dedicated to some of the well known films they have helped produce for example,  Shrek. Again this company does not specialise in genres. Some of the well known films they are known for are, 50 shades of grey, ride along. This company has offices across the world e.g. London, Los Angeles and almost anywhere internationally.

Logo

We decided that this was a good idea for a logo for our production. Although, this is just a idea, we may change this.

How to do a fight scene

One of the things that we are defiantly going to have in our scene is a fight scene.
Fight scenes are usually don't encounter physical harm to the people doing the scene. The camera shots and actions of the actors help with the realistic look of the fight. The people aim for the place they want to hit but miss it. Using fake blood is a good way to make the fight look realistic. This show how hard the punch is meant to be and how big the fight is. This is the visual image of the pain and injuries rather than just facials and body language. An example is if someone one punches a person n the face putting fake blood round their lips and/or get them to spit it out. Fake blood isn't the only prop that we will use, we will have to use eyeshadow, which will show the bruising and will also show the force of fights. These won't only be used on faces, it will be used for the knuckles and hands of those in the fight.
We may use slow motion shots to show the strength of the person behind it, and the weakness of the person receiving the punch. Having some slow motion shots it shows our ablity with the camera and editing.
We will also use other props in the scene. For example we may use plates. The plates would be thrown and broken. This will take time and a lot of takes as we want a specific speed and direction the plate would go. This means that we need to invest in quite a few plates that we are able to break.
We may also need knives. They need to be sharp and look realistic and look like we are using them in a violent manner, but we won't actually harm those in the scene. The camera shots and use of fake blood and voices will make this look realistic.
 Image result for broken plates
I feel that these are good props for the scene that we're doing. As the scene is set in a dining room and they're able to get hold of these props very easily.

There are some videos we watched on Youtube that has helped us with ideas about the fight actions that might help us when we film it. They also help with the camera shots and actions to do with the camera and how to do the make up to make the scene look real. These where the videos that stood out to us..
I found this clip very good at helping me understand the way to do a fight scene without hurting the person who is in the fight scene with you and how to position and hold the camera when they fight to show what type of fight scene we want like the heroic one or the realistic more brutal fight scene. This shows how important the body stances and performance are to make the fight look realistic, and affect the viewers and help the scene provide tension. Although the techniques in this video are quite simple and basic they are very effective.

This clip shows even more camera shots and how to hold the camera. This shows that it will take time to film as we need to find the correct shots that show the better punches. This clip shows that the use of blood is good for fight scenes. The clip shows that the victim when on the floor, the camera shots are usually pointed down, this could show how weak they are at that moment in time. The camera shots in this clip will make the fight scene look realistic and increase the energy of the fight.

The facials and movements through the fight scene are very important. They could make our break the clip. If the reaction of the punch or kick is a second too slow it could wreck the whole scene, as well as them reacting to quick to the punch. You facial reaction and body reaction is immensely important thing to focus on during the fight scene. This will show the realisation of the fight. I found that one of the best camera shots of a fight scene is the over the shoulder shot, this will make the people fighting look closer together.
Using a hand help camera through the fight scenes give the fight a realistic look as it is not clean cut. You should never voluntary shake a camera on purpose, but there will be slight shakes as it is a hand held camera, which could wreck the footage.
Editing skills I have found is that if we shoot a fight scene from two angels we will be to choose which one the fight will look better from. As we don't actually hit the person we are fighting we may need to find a angle that makes the fight scene look real.

Analysis of Kill Bill

Karlton Armstrongs analysis of kill bill. I really like how he anaylse it so i thought it was a good idea to use.

Kill Bill is a story, following a woman who tries to take revenge upon the five people who took her child away and killed it. She awakes in a church, and finds herself injured. During this volume she goes to find a 'Deadly Viper Assasinate Squad' member, Vernita Green, and eventually kills her. She then starts to search for the others.

The part I watched was the fight between the two charactors, 'The Bride' and 'Vernita Green' as it had a high relevance to what we wanted to achieve. However, we would also not have any of the breakable props. Therefore I am concentrating on the pace, sound, and speed of the action.
To begin with, we hear a little childs doll box sound, which is quickly shut off when 'The Bride' enters the scene in her car. We are led to belive that the house we see before she appears is the house that she is going to, but, it turns out that actually it is the house opposite. This is shown when she appears on screen. She has her face, facing the camera, which instantly tells us that we were looking at the wrong house.
Later on, when she presses the doorbell, and it is answered, we see a non linear structure, as she has a flashback to the fight that has occurred in the chapel. They then quickly make eye contact, and the paceof the piece picks up immediately, and everything becomes a lot quicker. A siren is heard whilst the non linear takes place. We can tell by the transparency of the film, that here eyes are still there connoting its 'The Brides' point of view, and it is clear enough to show that this woman was the one who attacked her. The pace starts off pretty slow, as she punches the woman in front of her. Gradually, the speed begins to build up, building tension, as the women throw each other around the room. The diagetic sounds are heightened to give more audience pleasures, and to make it more of a convention towards action, as action 'Junkies' indulge in louder sounds and lots of sound effects, making them happier. For example, the glass shattering is a lot louder than in real life. This helps to realise and identify what genre it is. The loud diagetic sounds pull the audience into the film, making them feel part of the action.
At 0:49 during the scene, we see The Bride get thrown to the floor and is kicked by Vernita. If we listen carefully, we can hear the kicks landing, much louder than we would in real life, which is also another convention of action movies.

The use of the creativity of the directors, for example, the cereal box gun, that makes the audience surprised of what has just happened. This is a audience pleasure, as they did not suspect what has happened.

The Wizard Of Oz (ending scene) analysis

I liked this scene of The Wizard Of Oz because I felt that the transition from Dorothy's dream state to her waking up was good.
The Wizard Of Oz is a plot about Dorothy going to the world of Oz by a storm. She finds her self within a world of munch kins and Glinda (the good witch), killing the wicked witch of the East. But all Dorothy wants to do is go home, Glinda tells her to do this, on her trip to The Great and Powerful Oz she gets a few companions, the tin man, the lion and the scarecrow. The tin man, lion and scarecrow all want something from Oz so they join her on her trip. They have trouble with the wicked witch of the eat. Fortunately Dorothy defeated that witch and managed to get to Oz. Oz had told the lion, tin man, and scarecrow they already had what they wanted. He agreed to take Dorothy home, but he went with out her meaning that Glinda had to come. Glinda came and told her she already had the power to do from the red ruby slippers that Dorothy wore.
The target audience of this film at the time of production was teenagers, as cinema became popular and that's how they spent their time. The film was made in the 1930s, which made The Wizard Of Oz one of the first films with sound and colour. Using the bright colours in Oz shows how magical and mysterious Oz is as when Dorothy is in Kansa the colouring is in sepia tone, which shows how ordinary it is. The audience of the film now is families, as it is a film you would usually sit down and watch with relatives. The uses and gratification techniques may be used for the audience in this film.  We may have been told by those around, friends or grandparents or parents that The Wizard Of Oz is a good film. We watch it as entertainment, as watching as family there may be discussions on what they might have done if they were Dorothy, and discuss who they like the best. We may identify our selves with Dorothy, when she figures out that there is 'no place like home', we may feel that way as some of us may have been away from home.
The non diegetic, heavy beated music that plays when Dorothy makes the transition between Oz and Kansas is the same music as when she got to Oz. This shows a sense of familiarity and it also tells us that she is going back home to Kansas. During this there where over-lapping images of Dorothy's face, the ruby slippers and some spinning circles on a black screen. This gives us a feel of travelling from one world to the next.
We see Glinda the good witch come to Dorothy with a non-diegetic acoustic version of Over The Rainbow. This song gives us a sense of hope that Glinda can help Dorothy. We know that Glinda is the good witch due to bright clothes she is wearing and arriving in a bubble and having a wand. Having a wand is usually a fairy prop so it being in Glinda shows that she is  good as fairies are mostly always good. Wearing light coloured clothes shows that she is a hero.
In fantasy films we see a magically place where no one has seen before. The world of Oz is magical place in this film. We see this by the bright colours and the kindliness of those in the Emerald City and the niceness of Glinda. This film is all done in 3rd person where no one talks to camera, we see the story develop through what they do and how they talk to those around them.
There are multiple strands in the scene I have done. There is Glinda coming to help Dorothy get home, Dorothy saying goodbye to the lion, tin man, and the scarecrow, and Dorothy going home to Kansas. They all intertwine with each other due to the magic and the wizard of oz.
Dorothy is usually in the centre of the scene, this may show her importance to the film. When she says goodbye to the lion, tin man and scarecrow the shots only focus on that. The person she is saying goodbye to are in focus while the other surroundings are in blur (shallow depth focus shot), this may show how emotional or important this part is.

abduction (house) fight scene analysis

As one of our ideas was to do a fight scene i thought this was appropriate to analyse

'Would You Rather' film clip analysis

Would You Rather is a sub-genre of thriller- action, it's based in America; one of the main issues in the cost of health care, we this through the film with Iris struggling to pay for it and having to go to the diner party for help. Iris the princess/hero is the main character in this film. She needs help with paying for her brothers health care. . The doctor lets a man know that she needs help, The man has a dinner party with 8 people, iris being one of them, the plan of the evening is to play would you rather. The 8 people are all of different gender and ethnic group, and they're all there for there own reason. No it is not the child game of would you rather (this is game you play when you are with your friends, you have two hypothetical scenario to choose from and you say what you'd prefer to do, hence the name 'would you rather?', sometimes you are also given a time frame to choose the option you want, usually it is rather stupid scenarios like prefer to fight a horse sized duck or duck sized horse), this game pushes ethics and belief to the limit.

The clip of the film I have chosen to analyse is a scene from the dinner party where the 8 people have to choose whether they want to electrocute themselves or another person at the table.

The closing of the doors conotates the sense of being trapped and no way of getting out, and it could show that the main part of the film is about to start. it could also conotate the start of darkness. The darkness and the being trapped in the room makes us feel that saw had a influence on this film. We see this as parts of saw is in a quite building that gives a sense of being trapped.
The lighting through this scene was low key lighting. Although you could see what was happening around the table the brightness wasn't at its full. This follows the lead of thriller and horrors as they're level of brightness is not as bright as comedy and romance films. Normally action films have low key lighting, this shows intensity. They show the low key lighting by having lamps at the back of the scene being on.
The setting is a big mansion in the middle of rich area. this shows that the owner is very rich  and  shows that there is a lot of room and it also gives us the idea that the house was sound proof. Although there might people be living in a close range the house would be pretty big so the sounds of the things happening in the house would not be able to be heard from the outside world. As it is set in a mansion there are many rooms that are not being used, some camera shots cross cuts from what is happening in the dining room to the doctor trying to help get them out of the situation they are in.
The man that is sitting at the head of the table shows that he is the villain of the film, it shows that he is the a important person as that is normally where the main or most important people sit. The antagonist of the film is usually in the centre of the shot, again this shows the importance of him through the film.  The 8 people sitting around the table look like his disciples and will do whatever he says. Most of the subordinates faces through out this scene are full of shock and horror and disbelieve. While the dominant, evil characters have a evil smirk on their faces as they make the contestants choose some of thee hardest decisions in their lives.

This is a linear film, as we see all through the dinner party, and the dinner party is one night so we don't really miss much. There are multiple strands through this clip. These are; the shooting,  deciding who to electrocute and someone trying to get into the building. The strands intertwine with each other as they all interact in the dinning room and the 8 people around the table. The characters in the film did not talk to the camera, they are telling the story as though we are there with them so are using 3rd person.. Some of the camera shots make us feel that we are there with them in intense scenes, but as a omniscient observer rather than a spectator. The target audience of the film is teenagers and those who like twisted plots. Uses and Gratification is used through out the film. The entertainment/diversion side of the film is that although it may be a thriller and quite scary we still watch it as a form of the entertainment. We would normally watch it in the comfort of our own home so we feel safe and secure when we watch it. The social solidarity of the film is that we may have heard how good and thrilling the film is from our friends or family, or we are the ones to say 'you should watch this' to others. This is where we will discuss what we would do if were ever in this situation. As our social life is mostly talking about the social media. We also see personal identity through the film. We see this as we see that we don't want to be the villain of the film, but we also don't want to be part of the others around the table. But we may want the courage of some of the people sitting at the table. If we watch this with other people we may discuss what we would do in the situation if we were in it. Even if we didn't watch it with someone but we knew someone who did we could still have this conversation about what they'd do. The target audience is 15-25 as they can empathise with the characters reaction to the things that are happening as they may feel closer to them as they are similar ages to them.

The gun shot shows panic and disorder through the participants as this is diegetic. Right after the gun shot we hear non-diegetic string and piano music being played to show the sheer panic and distress of what is happening in the scene, as it is high notes. This is also gives us a focus on the people reaction. Being able to hear the diegetic sounds of the electrocution gives us a sense of terror and torture. We can also hear the breathing of the 8 people, so it shows the desperation and the exception of what has just happening. The ticking clock builds a panic, and in some cases can be quite a sinister sound like this, as it shows a countdown to a inevitable terrible act happening.

Response to the brief and our ideas

I have chosen to do the video brief for my assessment. I am working in a group of three with Faith Starie and Karlton Armstrong. I feel that it will allow us to use a large range of media techniques and camera shots and editing techniques. Doing the print brief may have to allowed me to use my full amount of media techniques and understanding of media terms. Deciding to do the video brief  I feel that we will be able to show off our media techniques and camera shots. Being able to edit the video as well will show that we are able to use the computers and editing apps to make the video clip  flow together.

We are now thinking about the genre we want to do;
comedy as whole was defiantly not a option to make as it can turn out rather bad.
horror/ thriller was another genre that we decided not to use. we decided this as it a cliche and we didn't want to follow the crowd.
I also thought romance films was another type of genre that we wouldn't do as it can be again to cliche.
we decided that action/adventure/thriller would be best suited for us, although there will be more adventure in it as we do not have the right equipment to make all the effects of what would happen if it was a budgeted film. Some of the films produced do not look professional at all while some do. We are aiming to make it look as professional as possible. The pros and cons of deciding to do a action film is being able to show that we are able to use a variety of camera shots as doing a fight scene will need a lot of effective shots that show what the fight would look like if it was real and injuring someone. The cons of doing this though is that if we don't manage on getting the fight scene shots looking perfect it can make the whole scene look terrible.

We decided that our target audience is teenagers, specifically from the ages of 14 to 25 for both genders. Boys are usually drawn to it due to the action sequences and the usual pretty girl that the hero tries to save, the girls are also interested too but not for the same reasons. The girls may watch the film if the hero is a good looking man,  Those who are younger than 14 may find it quite scary and frightening as they may not like the types of action going on. they may also not understand the story line that the film has either.

Our initial idea is that someone is going to bed at night and being able to see what they see in the dream. Then at the end of the two minute video we see them waking up and finding out their vivid dream wasn't real, but then finding out something strange is happening in their real lives too. There are many ideas that we all had for what could happen during the two minute video... we also had many more ideas:

An idea, we had as a group was that the equilibrium is going to be where there is a small group of friends or family sitting at a table at home, the disruption will be two of these people will look at each other and do some sort of signal. The recognition of the disruption is when they'd get up and do something violent to the other people sitting at the table. We might do a flash back on how they joined together and why they were after the people.  We'd finish the two minute video on a focus on the object/weapon they would use to hurt they other people.
We have finally decided that our genre of thriller and action. We decided this as many of our ideas went in the way of thriller and action, so decided that it is easier to think and make of our final production.
