Karlton Armstrongs analysis of kill bill. I really like how he anaylse it so i thought it was a good idea to use. Kill Bill is a story, following a woman who tries to take revenge upon the five people who took her child away and killed it. She awakes in a church, and finds herself injured. During this volume she goes to find a 'Deadly Viper Assasinate Squad' member, Vernita Green, and eventually kills her. She then starts to search for the others.
The part I watched was the fight between the two charactors, 'The Bride' and 'Vernita Green' as it had a high relevance to what we wanted to achieve. However, we would also not have any of the breakable props. Therefore I am concentrating on the pace, sound, and speed of the action.
To begin with, we hear a little childs doll box sound, which is quickly shut off when 'The Bride' enters the scene in her car. We are led to belive that the house we see before she appears is the house that she is going to, but, it turns out that actually it is the house opposite. This is shown when she appears on screen. She has her face, facing the camera, which instantly tells us that we were looking at the wrong house.
Later on, when she presses the doorbell, and it is answered, we see a non linear structure, as she has a flashback to the fight that has occurred in the chapel. They then quickly make eye contact, and the paceof the piece picks up immediately, and everything becomes a lot quicker. A siren is heard whilst the non linear takes place. We can tell by the transparency of the film, that here eyes are still there connoting its 'The Brides' point of view, and it is clear enough to show that this woman was the one who attacked her. The pace starts off pretty slow, as she punches the woman in front of her. Gradually, the speed begins to build up, building tension, as the women throw each other around the room. The diagetic sounds are heightened to give more audience pleasures, and to make it more of a convention towards action, as action 'Junkies' indulge in louder sounds and lots of sound effects, making them happier. For example, the glass shattering is a lot louder than in real life. This helps to realise and identify what genre it is. The loud diagetic sounds pull the audience into the film, making them feel part of the action.
At 0:49 during the scene, we see The Bride get thrown to the floor and is kicked by Vernita. If we listen carefully, we can hear the kicks landing, much louder than we would in real life, which is also another convention of action movies.
The use of the creativity of the directors, for example, the cereal box gun, that makes the audience surprised of what has just happened. This is a audience pleasure, as they did not suspect what has happened.
