Evaluation 7

What kind of media institutions might distribute your media product and why?

Company name and logo:
We are called FNK productions, we did think of other titles for our company like 'scribble media'  but we thought didn't have a professional feel to it, then we came up with FNK productions a while later. The 'FNK' part of the title was rather simple as it represents our groups initials.  F for Faith, N for Nicole (me), K for Karlton. We felt that this put the professional feel we wanted to have on our name. I also felt that the name reminds people of other words so they may remember the production company. This is like the clothing company FCUK as it has the similar sounding to a word we all know and remember well.
Our logo was like a film reale above the writing of our name. I thought this went well as some of the well known film production companies have this. Disney, Bad robot, Dreamworld, Colombia Pictures. In our logo we use 2 or 3 colours that we thought went well together, we felt that the colours had to be well liked by a lot of people so when they see a similar colour they may have a cue to think of our logo.
What do production companies do?
Production companies are the companies that work together to make the film, the pre production, production and post production. There are different types of production companies, there are some that have a large ray of sections in the whole company which can also help with distribution and different sections of the production stage. There are also production companies that work together to produce the final production, this may be due to the companies not affording to do the pre production, production and post production. The larger companies that have lots of components are usually for the larger Hollywood blockbuster films that have more of the well known actors,  writers, camera crew, etc. And they feel that the have a greater chance of getting more profit so could feel that the film would have a lot of success. The smaller production companies are usually the ones that support the indie films for niche audiences. These companies may not need to make a profit as some of them may be there to help new film directors like the BFI funds.
The idea of distributors and who that might be and why:
The distributors are the companies that get the film from pre production to the audience. This can be from publicity (posters, interviews, trailers, comics, CDs, etc.) to the cinemas that they are showed in if they are shown in cinemas. There are some films that don't make it into the big cinemas either because they don't have enough money in their distribution fund, or they decided that they don't want to make a profit from making the films, this could because they are film geeks and love the idea they could produce a film. Smaller niche films are also well known for being part of film festivals and being awarded film festival awards. Again this may be due to the cost, but could also be because of the directors wanting it to go to true film fans. The distributors are there to help the production have a good smooth change from being in the editing room to the big screen.
Where the money may have come from for a film like yours?
As our film is more for the small niche audience I feel that we would get our money/funding for the film from independent production and distribution companies as we know that we wouldn't be able to reach the larger audiences. This could be because we didn't follow some conventions of the action genre, especially as we set the fight scene in a homey realistic setting and in a quite locations which is different to the conventional action films that are set in larger cities such as, New York City, Los Angeles, London etc. We also wouldn't be making this film to have a profit if we were to get money, as we wanted to film this not just because it was part of our coursework but because we all have a love of film. This is like 'Hunt for Gollum' which is a well known film that had been made with  £3,000 and with the chance of having no profit, as they didn't put it in the cinemas but had a free download and website to watch the film. As the group we decided that this would be how we wanted to distribute the film if we were to finish it. If we were to drake this film so that it was to break even or make a small profit we would ask companies such as the BFI funds and other smaller companies to help us produce the money that we need for the production to go further.
Why the various people are named in the titles - which jobs appear in the titles and in what order and how they have reflected to this?
We only have our three names in the final production, this is due to only us three being in the film and being the ones that have done the post production and pre production, the cameraman, the editing etc. We decided that we didn't want the job titles in the opening after we talked to those around us when we were editing.  We also figured that if we were to put the roles and the people who did them would be very repetitive as we were all part of every manner of the film, when one was ill another did that role for the day, and we helped each other when we were struggling or when we needed advice and praise on what we were doing. I thought that we wouldn't have the  full list on who was behind the camera helping produce the film at the beginning of the film as it could go on for a while as there is a lot of things that happen behind the camera that help make it happen. And this usually doesn't happen in the Hollywood blockbusters and indie films, so we made sure that we didn't do this either. At the beginning of the films we usually see the main actors who are involved in the films so we know who are seeing.

Looking back at your preliminary task (the continuity editing task), what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to full product?
Our preliminary task was 29 seconds, although short it showed some of the skills that we used in our final product. To do the preliminary task as well we need to do some research on some of the skills that we needed to use.
We had to research the 180 degree rule, which is where I found that we'd shoot on one side and we would not show the side where the camera would be and that side of the set would stay unseen to the audience. We have used this in our final production when we see faith walking down the street, as we only see that fall of the street.

We also researched on what match on action was, we showed this in the preliminary by shooting Karlton opening the door handle, and doing it different shots to help show detail, but we also found the it could show tension if done in the correct manner with sound and the shots before and after the match on action. I feel that as Faith did filmed the preliminary task she was able to help me film the match on action in our final product. We used match on action twice in our final product both near the beginning of the scene as we were less focused on the fight scene. We used this technique when we saw faith jumping over the wall, amd when she was opening the door just before we see her see Kartlton's character look as though he is punching my character. Although the filming helped get the match on action feel the editing also had a large pat of making it happen in both the preliminary and the final product, this is because they have to cut to the perfect moment so it looks professional.
the preliminary shot One of the final product match on action

In the preliminary we also used the shot reverse shot technique, which is where we see one of the characters talking to another, but we see that character talk and then the shot changes to see the other character (the person who was being talked at) reply to the original character. This is usually used to emphase the interaction between the two or more characters, and it also helps the viewers see the reaction of what have been said on either side of the characters. Unfortunately we didn't use this in our final production as we decided that we wanted more action to be shown than talking, the talking in the final production is a point of view shot, so we thought that this wasn't the main technique that we wanted to focus on using.

What I learnt?
Being behind the camera for most of the final production allowed me to get the same movement in a few shots, and that has allowed us to think of the idea that we could use some of the techniques that were used in the preliminary task. With the help of watching that and having ideas of what I needed to take and having faith there to help guide me in the right direction of shots (since she was the cameraman in the preliminary task) allowed  me to get the right shots that would be able to be edited together and look professional.

How did you attract/address your audience?
Our characters have similar qualities of ones that are in other action films. One of these films is Abduction. We liked this film as the main protagonist was a teenage boy, which is like our main protagonist except that it was a girl. Due to some of the results of the questionnaires we did, we found that the audience wanted to see a teenage lead, and wanted to see more women being involved in the action. That is why we thought that we should star in the film. We also see a resemblance in the film as the protagonist doesn't know what is going on, just like our protagonist. We felt that having this resemblance would help us get our audience.

We also have a sense of horror in our opening, which is not the convention of action, we felt that having this type of music we would help build the excitement of what is happening in the opening. I thought that this allowed us to keep the interest of the audience in our film, as having this type of music shows that there is going to be a bit of an exciting, action scene.

There are also some shots that we have used that are similar to other shots that have been used in other action films or TV shows.
We have a shot of where we have a close up of the protagonist like this. We see the main character and not much in the background, it is easier plain or it is blurred, like this one. Our shot is where we have a plain background and we have Faiths face who is the protagonist.

Evaluation 3 - HOW DOES YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT REPRESENT PARTICULAR SOCIAL GROUPS?

I HAVE PICKED THE JOKER AND KARLTON.
THEY BOTH HAVE GREEN WHICH COULD SHOW A SENSE OF REBLELLISM, WHICH IS AN EFFECT OF BEING AN ANTAGONIST. BUT AS THEY BOTH HAVE GREEN HAIR HELPS ASSOCIATE THEM TOGETHER, THEY ARE BOTH ANTAGONISTS.

THEY BOTH HAVE DARK CLOTHES ON, THIS COULD REPRESENT THAT THEY ARE SIMILAR ANTAGONIST ROLES. ALTHOUGH THE JOKER HAS MORE DRESSY CLOTHING WHICH IS UNIQUE, WHILE KARLTON HAS A MORE CASUAL FASHION TO IT

THEY BOTH HAVE DARKNESS AROUND THEIR EYES
TO MAKE THEM SEEM MORE DEMONIC. THEY ALSO
HAVE RED AROUND THE THIER MOUTHS, ALTHOUGH
THEY ARE FOR DIFFERENT MATTERS. THE JOKER HAS
THE RED AROUND HIS MOUTH AS IT IS PART OF HIS
PERSONALITYAND IDENTITY, IT IS ALSO A REASON
WHY HE HIS SO REMEMBERED.
